How to Reduce Noise in a Parabolic Microphone

    • 1). Unplug and replug all the cables running from the microphone to the recording device. Sometimes excessive background noise can be caused by simply bad connections from improperly connected or loose cables. If noise persists even after adjusting connections, check to see if any cables are damaged and need to be replaced.

    • 2). Attach a windscreen to the microphone. If the microphone is being used in outdoor, windy conditions, a windscreen can help muffle any strong gusts moving across the microphone, rendering the targeted audio clearer.

    • 3). Move the microphone closer to the targeted audio. While one of the main benefits of a parabolic microphone is its ability to capture sound over long distances, moving closer to the recording subject if possible will reduce the amount of excessive noise occurring between the microphone and subject that will be captured.

    • 4). Hold the microphone in your hands, as opposed to resting it on an item while recording. Putting the microphone down can be more comfortable over long recording sessions, but items like tables can also vibrate as subjects move around it. Those vibrations, in turn, can be picked up by the microphone as background noise.
