Surround Sound Wiring Tips

    Location

    • Choosing the location for your speakers is important, not just for the way the system will sound, but also for practical reasons. You need to find spots where the speakers can be easily mounted. Your speakers may come with brackets. If not you can buy them.

    Wiring

    • The center speaker goes close to your stereo unit. You can save wire and avoid a tangle by using short speaker wires to connect the center speakers to your stereo. You can use any size speaker wire because the signal will not be traveling very far. Sixteen-gauge wire is sufficient for any of the speakers you are using or mounting.

For the satellite speakers, place wires under carpet or nail or staple them to base boards along the perimeter of the room. You want to use speaker wire that can be painted so that you can match the walls or base boards.

When attaching the wires to base boards or walls, make sure that you do not puncture the wires themselves because the damage will effect the sound going to your speakers.

One option, if possible, is to run your wires through a small hole in the floor or ceiling, through your crawl space or attic and then back to the satellite speakers. This takes more work, but it will give you a clean, professional look.
