Local Phone Companies Alternatives
- There are several companies offering VoIP services. Vonage and Magic Jack advertise on television that you can buy their adapter and install it on your computer, creating a phone jack that taps into your high speed internet, allowing you to make phone calls for a monthly or annual fee. Skype allows you to download their software for free, and uses your computer's speakers and microphone to communicate with other Skype members at no charge. For under $3 a month, you're given the option of calling skype users and land-line or cell phone numbers, as well as toll-free numbers. An incoming phone number carries an additional cost. With Skype, you can also make video calls with your webcam, but you can not call 911.
- If your television programming is provided by satellite, you might want to see how much it would be to have phone service added. Many satellite companies offer "bundled" service packages with various combinations of television, Internet and phone service. In most cases, you can keep your existing phone number.
- Cable companies also offer bundled packages that allow you to get telephone service to your home by combining it with other products. Your phone still plugs into the same phone jack that it does when you use the phone company, only instead of being wired to the telephone pole, it's wired into your cable source. The installer uses an adapter to hook it up.
