How to Grow Chinese Broccoli
- 1). Prepare the growing location early in the spring as soon as you can cultivate the soil. Work the soil with the garden spade down to a depth of about 6 inches. Add approximately 4 inches of rich compost over the top of the soil and mix the compost into the soil thoroughly with the garden spade. Rake the soil surface smooth to finish.
- 2). Scatter the Chinese broccoli seeds evenly over the planting area and cover the seeds with about 1 inch of soil.
- 3). Water the soil after you finish sowing the seeds. Keep the soil evenly moist while the seeds germinate.
- 4). Thin the young Chinese broccoli plants when the plants reach a height of approximately 4 inches. Remove the weakest plants, leaving a 6-inch spacing if you plan to harvest young plants, or a 12-inch spacing if you plan to harvest mature plants.
- 5). Harvest from young plants when you see new shoots growing -- before flowers appear. The plant will respond with more vigorous growth. Continue harvesting as the plant matures and begin harvesting spears as the plant produces them.
- 6). Cut the plants down after they finish flowering to make room for different plants in your garden. Use the stems, leaves and flowers in stir-fries and salads.
