How Can I Put My Old Music From My Old iPod on a New One?
- 1). Connect your iPod to your computer via the USB cable.
- 2). Double-click on "My Computer." This will display all the storage devices on your computer, including the iPod. Double-click on the iPod folder to explore it with the Windows file folder system. At the top of the window will be a number of options. One will be the "Tools" menu.
- 3). Click on the tools menu, and select "Folder Options." Under "Folder Options,", select "View," then check the box for "Show Hidden Files," and another check box for "Apply These Changes To All Subfolders and Hidden Files." Check both of these boxes, then click the button marked "OK." This will display all the files on the iPod.
- 1). Install TinkerTool, which is a free utility that allows you to change the hidden status of files in Mac OS X. Double-click on the program to launch it, then click on the "Finder" tab within TinkerTool. A number of options are shown; the two you're interested in are the check boxes next to "Show Hidden Files" and "System Files." Check both of these boxes.
- 2). Click the "Relaunch Finder" button. This restarts the Mac OS X finder, with the properties you selected in Step 1 enabled. You will see the icons on your desktop flicker as the Finder restarts. This is normal.
- 3). Plug the USB cable into the iPod, and connect it to your computer. The iPod icon will show up on your desktop as a detachable storage device.
- 1). Launch iTunes. Make sure that you tell it to not synchronize the iPod.
- 2). Switch over to the tab labeled "Preferences" in iTunes, then go to the "Advanced" tab under "Preferences." Two check boxes with options can be selected: "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" and "Copy File to iTunes Music Folder When Adding To Library." They're under the "Advanced" tab.
- 3). Double-click on the icon for your iPod. You will see a previously hidden folder called "iPod_Control." Within that folder will be a "Music" sub-folder, and there will be several other folders under that.
- 4). Switch over to the "Source" tab in iTunes, and make sure the "Library" option is showing.
- 5). Open each subfolder under Music -- they all start with the letter "F" -- and drag the files within to the "Library" panel. ITunes will add them to your music library.
- 6). Unplug the old iPod from the computer, and plug the new iPod to the computer. ITunes will ask if you want to synchronize the music library with the new iPod. Allow this to happen; you've now copied your old music library off of your old iPod and into iTunes, allowing you to migrate the music to any iPods you own.
