    USB Transfer

    • 1). Locate the camera's USB port. The exact location of the USB port will vary according to the make and model. Refer to the camera's operating manual if you are unable to find the port. Most USB ports are small rectangular/square opening located on the side or bottom portion of the camera. The USB port on a camera will be much smaller than a USB port on a computer.

    • 2). Locate the computer's USB port. Desktop computers will house a USB port on the front panel of the computing tower or on the back of the tower depending on the model. If you are unable to find the USB port, read the operating manual that came with the computer. A computer USB port is a rectangular opening normally measuring less than half-an-inch wide. A diagram is commonly found near this opening. The diagram features vertical line with an arrow at the tip with two other shorter curved lines stemming from the main line. The left curved line features a circle on the tip while the right curved line features a square.

    • 3). Connect camera to computer using a USB cord. Most digital cameras come with a USB cord; however, if you cannot locate this cord, visit your local electronics retail store and purchase a USB cord from the digital camera department. Write down the make and model of your digital camera to ensure the cord is compatible.

To connect the cord, locate the smaller end of the plug, which will be the same size as the camera USB port. Carefully insert the small end into the camera. Plug the larger end of the cord into the computer.

    • 4). Upload the image files into your computer. Once you connect the USB cord to the computer, an alert will ask you where to store the images. Create a new folder and title it with either the upload date or a description of the images. This is important so you can easily find the pictures after uploading.

    • 5). If an alert does not appear, navigate to the computer's device listing page. On a PC this is the "My Computer" page while on a Mac it is the "Macintosh HD" or "Finder" page. Located on this page, you will see a USB icon with the name of your digital camera underneath it. Double-click this icon to view the camera's images. Choose the "Select All" option to highlight all of the images. On a PC, right-click on one of the highlighted images and select "Copy." On a Mac, select "Copy" from the "Edit" menu.

    • 6). Minimize this screen and create a new folder by navigating to your "My Documents" folder in a PC or the "Finder" application for a Mac. Under the "File" menu for both PC and Mac computers select "New Folder". Name this folder appropriately and press "Ctrl + V" on a PC or "command + V" on a Mac to paste the photographs. You can also drag and drop the files from one folder to the other.

    Memory Card Transfer

    • 1). Remove the memory card from camera. The location of the memory card will vary according to the make and model of your digital camera. If you are unable to find the card, review the camera's operating manual.

    • 2). Locate the memory card slot in computer. The memory card slot will be located on the front panel of a desktop computer or on the left or right side of a laptop computer. Older computers may not feature a memory card slot. Take note: As of 2010 the current market as a total of 15 different memory card types. Not every computer is outfitted with the capabilities to read every card type. Above or below the memory card slot there should be a listing of all supported memory cards. If your memory card type is not listed, upload the photographs through the USB method.

    • 3). Insert memory card in the slot. Upon doing so you will be prompted to create a new folder to store the images or select an existing folder. If creating a new folder, place the date of upload as its name or a description of the images. Confirm image upload and remove the memory card once this operation is complete.
